The spotted bellflower ( Campanula punctata ) is a species of bellflower ( Campanula ) in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae).
features
The dotted bellflower is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of (20) 40 to 60 centimeters. The species forms underground runners. The lower leaves are pointed heart-shaped. The blade measures 5 to 8 centimeters × 1.5 to 4 centimeters and is hairy, wrinkled-annoying, long-stalked and deeply serrate. The flowers are loosely grouped in twos or threes. The crown is reddish-white in color, its inside is dotted dark red to chestnut brown. It is drooping and tubed, in the middle it is bulbous. The corolla lobes are directed forward. The calyx tips are obliquely protruding.
The flowering period extends from June to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
Occurrence
The spotted bellflower occurs in the Far East , East Siberia , Korea , Japan and North China on stony mountain forest slopes, sandbanks by river banks and in bushes.
Systematics
One can distinguish between two varieties:
- Campanula punctata var. Hondoensis (Kitam.) Ohwi ex T.Shimizu : This endemic occurs only on the Japanese island of Honshū. He has no chalice appendages.
- Campanula punctata Lam. var. punctata : It occurs from Siberia to China and Japan.
use
The dotted bellflower is used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and borders. It has been in culture since 1813 at the latest. There are numerous varieties (selection):
- 'Burghaltii': The crown is gray-lavender blue, the calyx tips are spreading.
- 'Sarastro': The flowers are deep purple.
- 'Van Houttei': The plant reaches heights of growth of 60 centimeters. The flowers are blue-violet. This variety is a hybrid of Campanula latifolia and Campanula punctata .
- 'Nana alba': The plant reaches heights of 15 to 20 centimeters. The flowers are white.
- 'Hoop skirt': The flowers are double.
