The bellflower ( Campanula latifolia ) or broadleaf bellflower is a plant type from the genus of bellflowers ( Campanula ) in the family of the bell flower plants (Campanulaceae).

description

The broad-leaved bellflower is a 60 to 120 cm high perennial plant with strong rhizomes and spindle-shaped, thickened side roots. The stem is round or bluntly grooved and almost bare. The basal leaves are short-stalked, ovate-elongated and softly hairy on both sides.

The inflorescences are more or less one-sided and relatively heavily leafed through. There are two bracts in the middle of the flower stalks . The flowers are light blue-violet and usually have a length of four to six centimeters, the calyx tip is lanceolate. The flowering period is between June and August.

The fruits are capsules that open at the bottom with pores.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The broad-leaved bellflower occurs in Europe, but also in the Himalayas , in the Alps it is widespread to scattered, it is less common in the Alpine foothills, but to the east it can also be found as far as Thuringia , Saxony-Anhalt and the Bohemian foothills .

It prefers tall herbaceous forests, mixed deciduous forests rich in herbs, can also be found at lower altitudes near streams. It grows on freshly seeped, moist, alkaline and nutrient-rich loam soils with high levels of precipitation at altitudes of up to 1500 m. It occurs mainly in the Ulmo-Aceretum from the Tilio-Acerion association and in the Aegopodio-Anthriscetum nitidae from the Aegopodion podagrariae association.

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Campanula latifolia subsp. latifolia : It occurs from Europe to western Siberia and from western Asia to the middle Himalayas.
  • Campanula latifolia subsp. megrelica (Manden. & Kuth.) Ogan. : It occurs in the Caucasus.
