Cooked on Phonics is a studio album released by Canadian rock musician Devin Townsend under the name Punky Breasters . It was initially released only in Japan in 1995 and was released in North America in March 1996 .

background

The concept album is a parody of the pop-punk movement emerging in the early 1990s . It's about a Polish Death Metal band called "Cryptic Coroner". The unsuccessful band changes their style to pop-punk, is signed by a major label and wins a "Granny Award". The recordings for the album took place in the Red Stripe Studio around the same time as the recordings for the debut album of Townsend's project Strapping Young Lad , the final mix took place in the Mushroom Studios in Vancouver . Musicians from Strapping Young Lad were involved as session musicians, including drummer Adrian White.

content

Radio play-like passages are inserted between the individual songs , which tell the story of the band "Cryptic Coroner". This begins with an appearance in the fictional punk club "Malone's". During the performance, the guitarist tears a string so that he can no longer play the low notes typical of Death Metal. The band then improvised a punk piece. Since the performance is randomly broadcast on local radio, the song becomes a hit. The band renames itself Punky Brüster , becomes a commercially successful punk band and eventually wins a Granny Award . The story ends with the fact that during the performance at the award ceremony the musical roots of the musicians in death metal displace the punk elements.

reception

Michael Rensen from the music magazine Rock Hard described the album as a "weird rock opera". Tobias Wagner of the online magazine earshot.at sees musical parallels to German Fun-metal band JBO Stylistically the music of each track is geared to the history and be largely attributed to the punk rock, although in songs like Crusty's At The Ivanhoe also influences from metalcore to be heard.
