Punta de la Descubierta ( Spanish ) is a headland of Deception Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is 1 km north of New Rock . The headland is the site of a chinstrap penguin colony .

Spanish scientists named her after the corvette Discubierta , one of two ships with which the Italian navigator Alessandro Malaspina, who was in Spanish service, charted parts of the coasts of the Falkland Islands and southern Chile during his voyage from 1789 to 1794 . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated the Spanish designation into English in 2018.
