Pupilla turcmenica is a species of snail belonging to the family of pupae , which belongs to the subordinate class of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The right-hand wound, egg-shaped to egg-shaped cylindrical housing is 3.00 to 3.80 mm high (mean (n = 100): 3.41 mm) and 1.65 to 1.95 mm wide (mean (n = 100): 1.77 mm). The height / width index varies from 1.58 to 2.30 (mean: 1.93). Due to this variability, the housings appear comparatively short to moderately long. The apex is bluntly rounded. It has 5.8 to 7.0 turns, the periphery of which is flat to moderately curved; accordingly, the seam is shallow to moderately deep. The last turn gradually increases. The edge of the mouth is approximately egg-shaped with a slightly flattened base. The lip is moderately to significantly thickened and clearly bent at the spindle edge and at the lower edge. A parietal callus is clear, but less developed than the lip. In the side view, the weak to strongly pronounced neck bulge (from the base to the seam) can be clearly seen; it is separated from the lip by a distinct furrow and appears white through the shell. The mouth is unreinforced or has only a rudimentary parietal tooth. The open navel is narrow-shaped. The surface of the case shows very fine radial ribs, which appear very sharp due to the attached peristracum combs. They are somewhat irregular in height and direction, and adjacent ribs are often connected to one another. The skin is light yellowish-brown, moderately thick and translucent.

In the male genital tract, the spermatic duct branches off from the egg duct (sperm duct) relatively early. It opens apically into the epiphallus. The epiphallus is about as long as the penis. The penis is long, tubular and slender with a conically shaped, rather slender caecum at the epiphallus / penis transition. The penile appendix is slightly longer than the penis and is divided into a lower, thick part and a thin, long upper part. The penile retractor muscle divides into two strands, one of which inserts on the epiphallus, the other on the basal, thick part of the penile appendix. Free fallopian tubes and vagina are relatively long in the female tract. The stem of the spermathec is very thin, the bladder barely formed. Shortly before the end, a short diverticulum branches off.

Similar species

Pupilla turcmenica is similar to the two almost toothless species Pupilla paraturcmenica and Pupilla annandalei . Pupilla paraturcmenica has more domed but less convolutions, no bulge in the neck, a wider and round navel, a thinner lip and a darker housing color. There are also differences in the genital system. Pupilla paraturcmenica has a longer caecum, a shorter epiphallus, a longer penile appendix and the attachment of the retractor muscle to the penis is closer to the caecum.

Also Pupilla annandalei has on the periphery more arched turns and the last turn rises quite abruptly. The rounded navel is wider and there is no bulge in the neck.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Pupilla turcmenica occurs in the Kopet-Dag (northeastern Iran), in the Tian Shan , western China, Tibet, northern Afghanistan and in Balochistan (southern Pakistan).

The species lives on dry slopes, mainly on calcareous soils in or near juniper forests. It occurs there from about 2400 to 2700 meters above sea level.

Taxonomy

The taxon was introduced into literature in 1889 by Oskar Boettger as Pupa cupa (Jan) 1832 var. Turcmenica . Likharev & Starobogatov (1967) place the taxon as a subspecies of the striped pupa snail (as Pupilla sterri turcmenica ). Pokryszko et al. (2009) treat the taxon as a separate species.
