Puriri is a small village in the Thames-Coromandel District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The village is located around 12 km south-southeast of Thames on the eastern edge of the Hauraki Plains . To the north of the village, the Puriri River flows past and joins the Waihou River just under 3 km to the west .
history
Puriri was originally a settlement of the Ngati Maru . Missionary Henry Williams and three of his colleagues visited the settlement in 1833 and established a mission station there, which was taken over by James Preece in 1834 with the assistance of James Hamlin . In 1838 the site of the station was transferred to Parawai , now part of the Thames community . In 1868, during the gold rush in the Thames-Coromandel region , gold was found and mined near Puriri .
Education
With the Puriri School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2016, 24 students attended the school.
