Purnell Pratt

Purnell B. Pratt (born October 20, 1878 in Bethel , Clay County , Illinois , † July 25, 1941 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

Purnell Pratt made his debut on Broadway with the comedy A Venetian Romance in 1904 , where he appeared in numerous productions until the late 1920s. Parallel to his theater roles, Pratt made his film debut in 1914 and was seen three years later in the first film adaptation of Earl Derr Bigger's Seven Keys to Baldpate at the side of George M. Cohan . From the mid-1920s he joined regular in films and made a few years later with his voice of experience as a theater actor to jump in the sound film .

In the pre-code era of the early 1930s, Pratt received some of his best roles. His best-known films include the gangster film classics The Public Enemy (1931), in which he played the beating father of a later gang boss, and Scarface (1932), in which, as a newspaper publisher, he reports on crime in a sensational way. In the Oscar-winning Vicki Baum film People in the Hotel (1932), Pratt played the role of Doctor Zinnowitz. He mostly played serious and authoritarian supporting characters, often police officers or prosecutors, but sometimes also shady characters such as gang bosses or corrupt politicians. In total he appeared in over 110 film productions until the year of his death. Pratt was married to Julia C. Price from 1902 until his death.
