The pyramid boxfish ( Tetrosomus gibbosus ) lives in the Red Sea and the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to southern Japan , Indonesia and northern Australia . He immigrated through the Suez Canal into the south-eastern Mediterranean ( Lesseps migration ). It prefers coastal reefs and mostly stays near the reef base to a depth of 110 meters above sandy and soft bottoms, seagrass meadows and algae fields. The solitary fish feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates .

features

Characteristic of the species is the almost triangular cross-section of the body with a large thorn in the middle of the back and the angular, spiked, lateral abdominal ridges. There is also a sting above the eyes. The fish are gray to ocher in color with some irregular blue spots. The polygonal edges of the bone plates that make up the shell are often clearly visible. Pyramid boxfish grow to be 30 centimeters long.
