Lidwien van de Ven

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lidwien van de Ven (* 1963 in Hulst ) is a Dutch photographer and video artist . Her photographic works are predominantly in black and white and take on topics related to the perception of reality conveyed by the media .

life and work

Lidwien van de Ven was born in Hulst in the Dutch province of Zeeland . In 1985 she started working as a photographer at the age of 22. Due to the nature of her subjects - for example demonstrations or people in war and catastrophe - her artistic work is close to press and travel photography. Your photos are often presented in prints that are reminiscent of advertising posters due to their size and hanging. Since 1995 she has also been working as a video artist.

"For me photography is not primarily a means of representation, but a medium that always obliges you to express yourself vis à vis the real world [...] I think that via the photographic image you end up exactly on the border between representation and reality; not just for me, but also in terms of how it intervenes in the social; in terms of how things are photographable; or on the contrary cannot be registered because of technical limitations; or because of a prohibition or because it just doesn't allow itself to be represented. "

  1. Translation: "For me, photography is not primarily a means of representation, but a medium that constantly obliges you to express yourself vis-à-vis reality. [...] I think that you move with the photographic image exactly on the border between image and reality. This applies not only to me, but also to the encroachment on society that a photo represents; for the question of whether things can be photographed; or on the contrary, because of technical limitations, they cannot be recorded; or cannot be photographed because of a ban or because it is simply not allowed.
