Adolf Gottlob

Adolf Gottlob (born January 30, 1857 in Volkmarsen ; † June 12, 1930 in Breslau ) was a German historian.

Life

He was the son of Georg Gottlob and his wife Gertrud Ludorf. After attending grammar schools in Fulda and Warburg , he studied at the universities of Münster , Berlin and Göttingen and obtained his doctorate in philosophy. In 1882 he started his military year in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1883 he went on a trip to Italy, where he conducted historical studies in Rome, among other places.

In 1885 he returned to Germany and became a private tutor in Frankfurt am Main . From 1886 he worked as a private scholar in Freiburg im Breisgau. There he met Hedwig Burtscheid, whom he married on April 19, 1887 and with whom he had the children Thesa and Georg Wilhelm. In 1893 he went to the University of Friborg (Switzerland) as a lecturer , completed his habilitation and was appointed associate professor there. In 1898 he returned to Germany.

After a professional position as a private scholar at the University of Bonn , he became a professor of modern and ancient history at the University of Münster in 1908 , where he was a member of the Society for Rhenish History . In 1927 he went to the University of Breslau as a history professor , where he worked until the end of his life. His main research interests were ecclesiastical topics of the Middle Ages such as the sale of indulgences, crusade deeds, canon law and the political history of France. He also researched the history of the city of Warburg.

In May 1910 Gottlob was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . Since May 1914 he was also a committee member there.
