Q 244 was the hull number of the first project for the construction of a French nuclear submarine .
Construction began in Cherbourg in 1955 . The project was abandoned in 1958 and not completed.
A new building project was commissioned at the beginning of the 1960s. In contrast to the Q 244 draft, the armament was no longer to consist solely of torpedoes, but mainly of nuclear-armed ballistic missiles .
The new project, which also included the conventionally powered test submarine Gymnote (S 655) , was completed.
The French Navy put its first nuclear submarine into service in 1971 with the Le Redoutable (S 611) .
