Qingming role

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Qingming scroll ( Chinese  清明上河圖  /  清明上河图 , Pinyin Qīngmíng Shànghé Tú  - "picture of a river bank scenery for the Qingming festival") is a painting by the Chinese painter Zhang Zeduan (1085–1145). It is considered the most important work of art from the Song Dynasty and is the most famous Chinese painting. For centuries it was the highlight in the collections of Chinese emperors. It inspired countless copies and variations.

content

The scroll shows everyday life in the city of Kaifeng , the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty, during the Chinese Qingming Day . On the right edge you can see rural scenes, while the central part shows dense city life. Various street scenes with over 800 people, including craftsmen, traders, carters and shepherds, are shown in great detail. Several restaurants are also shown. The dramatic focus is the depiction of a ship's passage under an imposing bridge full of people, although it remains to be seen whether the ship's crew will manage to lower the mast in time.

The roll has a height of 24.8 centimeters and a length of 528.7 centimeters.

history

A special feature of the Qingming scroll is that it is one of the few paintings from the earlier imperial collection that is now in the People's Republic of China. Puyi cherished this image and took it with him when he was installed by the Japanese as Emperor of Manchukuo . As a result, it was no longer in the Forbidden City when the Guomindang took away the works of art from the Imperial Palace on their flight to Taiwan .

In 1945 the Qingming scroll was bought back to Beijing and has been in the Palace Museum ever since .

Kaifeng was the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty.
