The Queer Mountain ( English for Whimsical Mountain ) is a distinctive, 1,180 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises 1.5 km west of the Killer Ridge between the Cotton and Miller glaciers in the Saint Johns Range . Its steep slopes show bands of sandstone and granite .
The Australian geographer Frank Debenham mapped it in January 1912 during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) under the direction of the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . Debenham named him so because he found almost all types of rock from the area including coal .
