Réginald Becque (born September 13, 1972 in Denain ) is a former French football player .

Player career

In adolescence, the 172 centimeter tall Becque played in Valenciennes and Le Havre before he was accepted into the junior performance center of the second division team Chamois Niort . In this he did not make the breakthrough, which is why he moved to an amateur club from Fontainebleau around 1994 . There he was trained by the former professional Francisco Rubio and it was he who advised him to move to the position of defender , which he occupied for the rest of his career. He became a regular player in the fourth division and in 1997 went to Valenciennes FC, which was also in fourth class . In 1998 he moved to league rivals Calais RUFC . In the Calais jersey, he was one of the top performers and managed to become team captain, but entry into national football seemed hopeless. This changed in the 1999/2000 season, when he continued to play in the fourth division with Calais, but was able to beat two first and two second division teams in the national cup, making the 2000 cup final perfect.

Becque led the first fourth division team that had ever reached the final as captain on the pitch and was thus allowed to play for a national title without having previously played a professional appearance in the first or second division. His team took the lead 1-0 and held a 1-1 draw until opponents FC Nantes made it 2-1 in the 90th minute. Nantes' captain Mickaël Landreau expressed his appreciation for the performance of the amateurs by taking Becque to the trophy ceremony. Both players held the trophy aloft together.

Although he had gained national fame through his appearance at the Cup final in 2000, he then stayed with Calais and made it to the third division with the club in 2001. In 2002 the direct relegation followed, after which he remained loyal to his club. In 2005 he ended his career in which he never played a game under professional conditions and still took part in the cup final.

Further work

After he had given up active play in 2005, Becque took over the coaching responsibility for the second team from Calais, while he worked full-time for the shipping company SeaFrance . In 2009 he stopped at Calais and took over a lower class team from his home in Audruicq . He gave up his coaching position in 2012. A little later he started working as a youth trainer in Gravelines . He also organized tournaments in the USA for young people from his home region in northern France.
