The Réserve écologique André-Michaux is a protected area established in 1993 on 333 hectares and now 450 hectares in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec , in the county of La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau .

It is 6 km northeast of the municipality of Low , and borders the east bank of the Rivière Gatineau . It represents and protects the forests typical of the lower Gatineau area, where linden and yellow birch predominate.

The reserve is typical of the upper Laurentides. From the height of the Gatineau River at around 140  m above sea level, it rises to 424  m . The rock consists of paragneiss , granite and amphibolite . Tillit lies above it . Brown earth , podsol and lithosol denote the soils of the region.

Depending on the altitude, you can find xerophytes , but also those that prefer moist locations to different degrees. Among the xerophytes that prefer a drier location are the Weymouth pine ( Pinus strobus , French: Pin blanc d'Amérique or pinède blanc) and the American red pine ( Pinus resinosa ). In addition, the red oak ( Quercus rubra ), also called American red oak, can be found in less dry locations , which avoids waterlogging grounds, even prefers very dry ones here, and grows up to 35 m high. Often are white spruce , black ash and gray alder (French. Aulne rugueux) and Lime ( Tilia americana , French tilleul .: américain) and yellow birch and hemlock ( Tsuga ). Galearis spectabilis , a species of orchid, is considered endangered .

White-tailed deer , beaver , heron , collar grouse and dark duck ( Anas rubripes ) are the most striking representatives of the local fauna.

The name of the area goes back to the explorer and botanist André Michaux (1746–1803).
