The Réserve écologique de la Forêt-la-Blanche is an ecological reserve in the extreme south of the Canadian province of Québec .
It was established in 2003 on an area of 20.52 km² and is located in the MRC Papineau on the territory of the three municipalities of Mulgrave-et-Derry , Mayo and Saint-Sixte . It lies on the territory of the former parish of Buckingham, which is now part of the Ville de Gatineau .
It protects one of the last remnants of southern Quebec's pristine forests, which is also where some of the province's endangered or threatened plants can be found.
In the protected area there are accordingly sugar maple forests interspersed with beeches , but also with yellow birch and linden , as well as old stocks of hemlock or hemlock fir (Tsuga) with a species of the hop beech genus , the Virginian hop beech ( Ostrya virginiana (Mill.) K. Koch ).
So far, the entire forest has not been hit by logging or fire and thus reflects the pre-colonial situation of the regional forests.
The endangered or threatened species include American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolius ; French: ginseng américain or ginseng à cinq folioles ), forest garlic ( Allium tricoccum , French: Ail des bois ), then Carex backii and Carex platyphylla from the genus of Sedges , Proserpinaca palustris from the thousand-leaf family , Galearis spectabilis , a species of orchid, Ceratophyllum echinatum from the genus Hornblatt .
In addition, a large number of birds live in the reserve , including the poplar wood warbler ( Dendroica cerulea ), which is known here as Paruline azurée and is endangered. There are also some species of heron .
Access authorization to the protected area can only be issued by the Les Amis de la Forêt La Blanche association , which also offers a related teaching program.
