description

Illustration of Glischrocaryon aureum

The thousand-leaf plants are perennial , rarely annual , herbaceous plants , but there are also woody species. They either grow on land or are aquatic (diving) or marsh plants. The alternate, opposite or whorled leaves are petiolate to sessile. The leaf blade is simple or divided. The leaf margin is often serrated. There are no stipules.

Habit and inflorescences of Glischrocaryon behrii

The species are mostly single sexed ( monoecious ). The flowers are sometimes single, or mostly in spike-like , rarely in umbrella or racemose inflorescences . The mostly radial symmetry flowers are almost always small and unisexual, but also hermaphrodite flowers occur. There is a double perianth or there is a gradual transition from sepals to petals, with two or four free sepals and petals each. There are rarely three, usually four or eight fertile stamens present. Rarely two, usually three to four carpels have become an under constant ovary grown. Per carpel there is only one ovule . The syncarp ovary is subordinate. Pollination is mostly done by wind ( anemophilia ).

The flower formula is: or

There are stone fruits , nut crops or nutlets disintegrating schizocarps formed. The seeds contain more or less oil-containing endosperm .

distribution

The distribution is almost worldwide - the focus of biodiversity is on the southern hemisphere , u. a. in australia .

Systematics

The surname Haloragaceae was established in 1814 by Robert Brown in A Voyage to Terra Australis , 2, p. 549. The type genus is Haloragis J.R. Forst . & G.Forst. Synonyms for Haloragaceae R.Br . are: Cercodiaceae Juss. and Myriophyllaceae Schultz Sch.

The Haloragaceae family includes about eight genera with 145 species:

  • Glischrocaryon Endl. : With about five species found only in Australia.
  • Gonocarpus Thunb. : With about 35 species in southwest Asia and mainly in Australia and New Zealand .
  • Haloragis J.R. Forst . & G.Forst. : With 27 species in Australia (22 species) and in the southern Pacific.
  • Haloragodendron Orchard (Syn .: Cercodia Banks ex Murray , Meionectes R.Br. ): With about five species native to Australia. They are bushes ( -dendron for tree).
  • Laurembergia P.J.Bergius : With about four kinds.
  • Meziella Schindl. : With the only kind:
  • Millennium ( Myriophyllum L. , Syn .: Enydria Vell ., Vinkia Meijden ): With around 60 species of aquatic plants. Some Myriophyllum species are used as ornamental plants in aquariums and garden ponds. In some areas the plants are taken out of the water and used as fertilizer or fodder. Medical effects were examined.
  • Proserpinaca L .: Of the several species that are native to North America, Proserpinaca palustris L. (Syn .: Proserpinaca pectinata ; common name: swamp comb leaf ) is used as an aquarium plant.

The taxa of the earlier families Cercodiaceae and Myriophyllaceae are now classified in the Haloragaceae. The genus Gunnera used to belong to this family.
