Karl Brauckmann (born November 30, 1862 in Hengsen ; † March 28, 1938 in Jena ) was a German special education teacher who was particularly committed to the education and rehabilitation of children and young people with disabilities.

Life

Karl Brauckmann completed his school days in Opherdicke and Holzwickede . In Soest he was trained as a teacher and then worked there for eight years with deaf students. His goal was to set up their own schools for children who needed special support.

Then he went to Jena , where he studied and then became a university lecturer and later a city councilor. During his studies he worked in Johannes Trüper's home for children with developmental impairments and disorders on the Sophienhöhe . In 1894 he founded the first special school for deaf or hard of hearing children there on Fuchsturmweg. In Jena and Berlin he founded another school for pupils with disabilities. His son-in-law, the artist Walter Dexel , designed parts of his Jena villa, while the city refused to build his own villa. Nearby, a new street was named after him on Hausberg in 2016. In his home town of Holzwickede, a special school with a special focus on intellectual development was named after him.
