history

Protestant church

A settlement in Opherdicke has been handed down since 950 AD. The Evangelical Church in Opherdicke was built from Anröchter green sandstone from 1120 to 1150 in the Romanesque style. In the years 1868–1870 a new Romanesque extension was built. In the east it comprised a transept, the choir with apse and apse flank towers made of Westhofen sandstone . Until 1861 the burial places of all parishioners from Opherdicke and the surrounding peasant communities were located around the church. In the east of the church there are still three old tombstones from that time.

For the first time a small Catholic church was consecrated in 1702, which was also the grave church for the owners of the Opherdicke house . The tombstones inside the church tower testify to this. In 1893 the current parish church “St. Stephen ”erected. The Catholic cemetery was laid out in 1849. The hereditary burial of the von Lilien family is a listed building on the left at the entrance to the cemetery with its partly historical enclosure and grave slabs from the period from 1877 to 1912.

The municipality of Opherdicke belonged to the Aplerbeck office in the Dortmund district when the offices were set up in the Prussian province of Westphalia . On April 1, 1887, she moved to the newly formed district of Hörde . When this was dissolved on August 1, 1929, Hengsen came to the district of Hamm . This was renamed the Unna district in October 1930. On January 1, 1968, Hengsen and Opherdicke were incorporated into Holzwickede.
