The Réserve écologique des Caribous-de-Jourdan is a 712 hectare reserve established in 1994 in the south of the Canadian province of Québec , in the regional county municipality of La Vallée-de-l'Or .

It is located 30 km south of the main town, northwest of Lac Jourdan on the north bank of the Ottawa .

The sanctuary was established to protect one of the three remaining caribou herds in the south of the province. The other two herds can be found in the Parc national des Grands-Jardins and in the Parc national de la Gaspésie . The herd overwinters in the area, so the ecosystem in the Abitibi plain is of great importance, which is already sinking towards James Bay . This bay in turn is the southernmost of the Hudson Bay . The herd's tail area covers an area of approximately 1200 km². It is located a few kilometers south of Val-d'Or , on the border of the Réserve faunique La Vérendrye , an animal reserve . The herd has been shrinking continuously since the 1950s and today it only consists of about 40 animals. Above all, the destruction and fragmentation of their habitat by roads, settlements, farms and industrial plants, but also hunting and poaching, traffic accidents and the unrest that people bring into the herd have brought the herd to the brink of extinction.

The ice ages brought various types of deposits onto the very old granite rocks , so that today Podzol is the most common type of soil there. Firs , pines , like the Banks pine , and spruce grow on it .
