The Río Aguapey is a right tributary of the Río Uruguay and about 310 km long. It rises in the swamps near San Carlos in the Ituzaingó department in northeast Argentina . At the beginning, the many drainage canals around San Carlos feed the Río Aguapey. Then its course leads in a north-westerly direction. About four kilometers south of the Argentine highway Ruta Nacional 12 , the river makes a wide arc and begins to flow south. West of Alvear it finally flows into the Río Uruguay.

The Río Aguapey runs through swampy pastures for most of the time. The bank vegetation is partially completely destroyed or only a few meters wide. However, the natural course of the river is hardly affected along its entire length.
