The Río Atuel is an approximately 600 km long river in Argentina . It flows through the two provinces of Mendoza and La Pampa .
course
The Atuel rises in the Andes at 3080 m in the glacier lake of the same name, Laguna Atuel . It then flows towards the southwest and forms a broad mountain valley. It makes a wide arc southeast of El Sosneado , changing its course in a northeastern direction. At El Nihuil, the damming of the river creates the 96 km² El Nihuil reservoir . Immediately afterwards, the river forms a 60 km long canyon and the Valle Grande reservoir . In this section, the river falls from 1250 to 700 meters, creating strong rapids. After reaching the southern part of San Rafael , his path changes back to the south. South of Paso de Los Algarrobos it finally flows into the Río Salado del Oeste .
