The Río Ayampe , German: Ayampe River , is a 63 km long Ecuadorian river in the provinces of Guayas and Manabí .

The Ayampe rises in the Cordillera de Chongón (Guayas) on Cerro de Sombrero (German: "Huthügel") at an altitude of 800 m. It initially flows north and turns its course to the west when it reaches latitude 1 ° 40 '. After taking up a number of left and right tributaries, mostly on the southern Manabí side of the provincial border, it flows into the Pacific Ocean below the village of Guale near the 300-inhabitant town of Ayampe named after him . The catchment area of 610 km² forms a triangle with the base in the Cordillera . The first 23 kilometers in the mountains until the water of the tributary Vuelta larga is absorbed, the Ayampe is a torrent. In the wooded hill country of the middle reaches, without deep valley cuts, the current slows down and in the last third in the coastal plain the river meanders.

The water flow of the Río Ayampe has decreased considerably in recent years, up to the point that the drinking water supply in towns and villages on the coastal plain is at risk. In addition to road construction (sand and gravel extraction) for the Ruta del Sol, a section of the Panamericana , the threatening progressive deforestation due to partly illegal deforestation by the forest industry in large areas of the banks is decisive. The provincial governments have so far not been able to master the problem even by imposing fines.
