River course

The Río Baudó rises at an altitude of about 600  m in the Serranía del Baudó , a mountain range that runs between the river valley of the Río Atrato and the Pacific coast in a north-south direction. The headwaters are located in the Parque Nacional Natural Utría in the north of the Departamento del Chocó . The Río Baudó flows mainly in a southerly direction along the western flank of the Serranía del Baudó. It shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river loops. For the last 50 kilometers, the Río Baudó turns west and flows into the sea at the Pizarro settlement (municipality of Bajo Baudó ).

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Baudó covers around 4000 km². The mean discharge is 782 m³ / s.
