Río Negro is a commune in southern Chile . It is located in the Región de los Lagos around 38 km south of Osorno and 6 km south of the Ruta 5 road . The municipality has an area of ​​1266 km² and a population of 14,732 inhabitants (7204 women and 7528 men according to the 2002 census).

The municipality borders the city of Osorno and San Juan de la Costa to the north. In the east it borders on the city of Puerto Octay and in the west on the Pacific Ocean and in the south on Purranque .

The name Río Negro means Black River in Spanish . It was adopted by the Spanish from the Mapudungun language of the Mapuche , where the word Curuleufu means the same thing.

history

In the 19th century the commune was a large settlement between the towns of Chahuilco and Purranque. The natives called the settlement Curileufu . The municipality was founded on March 12, 1896 after a donation of land by Jose Miguel Alderete . The first mayor was Pedro González .
