The Río Sarapullo is a 47 km long right tributary of the Río Toachi in northwest Ecuador .

River course

The Río Sarapullo has its source on the northern flank of the 5126  m high Illinois Norte volcano in the Cordillera Occidental . The headwaters are at an altitude of about 4150  m . The Río Sarapullo flows mainly in a north-westerly direction through the mountains. It forms the border between the provinces of Cotopaxi and Pichincha along its entire length . Finally it flows into the Río Toachi. The Toachi Dam is located below the confluence of the Río Sarapullo with the Río Toachi . This was built as part of the Toachi-Pilatón hydropower project .

Catchment area

The Río Sarapullo drains an area of ​​around 390 km². The catchment area extends over a length of 15 km along the ridge of the Cordillera Occidental. It extends from the Corazón Volcano in the north to the Illinois Volcano in the south.
