The Illinois is a no longer active stratovolcano in Ecuador . It is located approximately 55 km southwest of Quito in the western cordillera of the Andes . Of its two peaks, the southern one, Iliniza Sur , 5248 m (left in the picture), is covered by a glacier, the northern one, Illinois Norte , 5126 m, is a pure rocky peak.

Ascent

The starting point for the ascent is usually the chargeable refuge “Nuevos Horizontes” at both peaks, which is located at 4740 m in the middle of the saddle between the two peaks. Technically, the Sur is much more difficult than the Norte and can only be climbed with glacier equipment. You don't necessarily need technical equipment for the Norte. The difficulties in rock climbing range up to about 2 degrees on the normal route. Nevertheless, helmets and ropes are recommended, as sections can be icy depending on the time of year and snow and difficult conditions can be expected in the event of sudden sudden falls of weather.

Plane crash in 2008

On August 31, 2008, a Boeing 737-200 , which was leased to the Venezuelan Conviasa by the Honduran airline Atlantic Airlines, crashed at an altitude of 4025 m on the southern summit of the Ilinizas. The aircraft, about 30 years old, was en route from Caracas Airport to Latacunga (16 km from the crash site), where maintenance work and a paint job were planned. The three crew members did not survive the crash.
