River course

The Río Yaupi rises in a sub-Andean mountain range at an altitude of about 1300  m . The headwaters are located 30 km southeast of the city of Santiago de Méndez . The Río Yaupi initially flows 15 km south-southeast. It then takes up the further west running Río Ajuntai Entza and turns for the next 10 km in a north-northeast direction. The Río Chinkianas flows into the Río Yaupi from the northwest. This now turns to the east. The rivers Río Wampis , Río Huambiza and Río Chapiza flow into the Río Yaupi, all coming from the north. At the confluence of the Rio Wampis , the village of Yaupi is 2.3 km north of the river. Another 3 km away is the lake Laguna de Kumpak . At river kilometer 22.5, below the confluence of the Río Chapiza, the Río Yaupi turns south. In its last 16 kilometers, the Río Yaupi flows to the southeast. The E40 highway (Santiago de Méndez - Puerto Morona ) crosses the river 5 km above the estuary . The Río Yaupi finally flows into the Río Santiago at the Peruvian border.
