Map of Wolins with the southern tip of Rów

The peninsula Rów ( Polish also Półwysep Rów , German Der Roof ) forms the southernmost part of the island Wolin in the Polish West Pomeranian Voivodeship .

geography

The peninsula is located west of the Głęboki Nurt ( The Deep Train ) waterway , the transition from the Szczecin Lagoon to the Dziwna ( Dievenow ). The peninsula extends about three kilometers from north to south. The extension in east-west direction is around one kilometer. The peninsula protrudes only a little above the water level of the lagoon and is sometimes flooded by storm floods.

history

The roof was already used as pasture land in the Middle Ages . Duke Bogislaw IV. Of Pomerania awarded the Roofwiesen ( Roff ) to the Wollin Monastery in 1304 and granted fishing rights; previously it had been in the possession of a Reslaw Witte. In 1305 he granted the city of Wollin the right to fish with a large net from the roof into the Stettiner Haff.

After the introduction of the Reformation and the abolition of the monasteries in Pomerania in the middle of the 16th century, the roof belonged to the ducal office of Wollin. The meadows were partly cultivated by a princely farm near the town of Wollin.

After the end of the Second World War , the Roof was placed under Polish administration along with the island of Wollin, part of Western Pomerania and Western Pomerania . In 1949 a ministerial decree of the People's Republic of Poland established “Rów” as the official Polish name of the peninsula.

In the 1990s, the Rów peninsula was declared a biotope reserve. It is home to rare plants and serves as a resting and breeding place for various bird species. Since 2005, Rów has been part of the Polish nature park on the Szczecin Lagoon.
