Rödgen Roman camp
The Roman camp Rödgen is a Roman military supply depots in the district Rödgen of Bad Nauheim in the Wetterau in Hesse . It is located about 700 meters east of the Goldstein camp .
Research history
The camp was discovered in 1960 by a doctor while building a school and extensively excavated from 1961 to 1966 and 1973 by employees of the Saalburg Museum.
history
Due to the coin and ceramic finds, the camp belongs to the Oberadenhorizont (better Oberaden-Rödgen-Horizont) with a founding date of around 10 BC. Thus Rödgen must be seen in the context of the Drusus campaigns (12 to 8 BC). The Wetterau was an ideal space for the Drusus offensive against Germania . Troops could be gathered here and supplies for the legions facing north ( Hedemünden ) could be organized.
The camp is located on a hill and covers an area of 3.3 hectares and was surrounded by a 3 meter wide wood-earth wall with a double ditch in front.
In the interior development, the three large horrea (warehouses) stand out, which speak for a supply and replenishment warehouse in the stage. The camp offered space for a crew of about 1,000. So far, however, it has not been possible to determine which legion the supply camp belonged to.
A prominent find from Rödgen is a strigilis (scraper for the purpose of cleaning the skin) with a decorated headboard and stamp (PRIMI).
After the end of the campaign, the camp was systematically laid down by fire by the Romans themselves. During his campaign two decades later, Germanicus set up a military camp on the castle hill of Friedberg , about 3 km south of Rödgen, which was then the Roman base in this region until 260 AD.
Monument protection
The area of the camp is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
