history

Pack of Rondo coffee

Although the name Röstfein was only registered as a trademark in the GDR in 1960 , the origin of the brand goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1908, construction work began on today's coffee roastery in Magdeburg's Hafenstrasse. The owner and operator was the Kathreiners Malzkaffeefabriken , which was one of the most important malt coffee manufacturers of the time. Until 1945 the malt coffees “Kneipp Malzkaffee” and “Linde” were produced in the Magdeburg plant.

After the end of the Second World War , the Magdeburg factory was expropriated . The malt coffee production continued. In 1947 the Association of Consumer Cooperatives finally took over the factory. With the new operators, new times began for the roasting plant. In 1954, real coffee beans were roasted for the first time, and in the same year it was launched under the new brand name Röstfein .

Röstfein was already the best-known umbrella brand for coffee in the GDR . In the 1970s, around 50,000 tons of different types of coffee such as B. RONDO ( "Jacobs is the coronation, but RONDO is the summit" ), MONA and KOSTA. But although coffee (Mona) was a luxury item with prices of around 40 GDR marks per 500 grams, the amount was not enough to meet the needs of the GDR citizens (see the coffee crisis in the GDR ). From necessity, was developed in Röstfein the: 1982 a particularly economical roasting method -Werk Magdeburg fluidized bed - roasting process . The beans were no longer roasted in the drum as before, where a valuable part was always burnt, but floating in hot steam. The invention contributed to a quantitatively better supply of coffee beans and a few years later also ensured the brand's survival.

After the turnaround in 1990, the Röstfein company was on the brink of collapse . The types of coffee RONDO, MONA & Co. disappeared from the supermarket shelves. Because the appetite of the former GDR citizens was initially for the western coffee brands, the seven GDR roasters fought for survival. Only one of them made it. Thanks to the innovative fluidized bed technology, the Magdeburg roastery remained marketable. Röstfein continued to produce coffee until 1996 , but not under its own name. Röstfein was able to survive in the market primarily through production for industrial cooperations .

In 1997, Röstfein decided to reintroduce RONDO Melange. In the course of the following years, the roastery brought other traditional varieties such as MOCCA Fix, MONA and “im nu” back onto the market. The coffee specialty RONDO Melange, refined with candied beans, is the company's best-selling product today.

The fluidized bed roasting process, which was modernized in 2002 and which has been used to roast and candy at the same time, is still unique in the world today.

Roasted coffees are primarily drunk in East Germany and increasingly also in West Germany. Röstfein also exports its products to the Netherlands , Belgium , Luxembourg , Spain , Greece , Dubai , Poland , Ukraine , Lithuania , Latvia , Russia , Slovakia , Romania , Namibia , Egypt and the Ivory Coast .
