Rüdiger Oppermann (* 1954 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German harpist and music manager.

Life

Rüdiger Oppermann grew up in the Palatinate . He received classical training on piano and cello , and also played the electric guitar in a blues band. In 1973 he heard Alan Stivell who motivated him to play the Celtic harp . In 1974 he made his first public appearance with a - self-made - harp. After leaving school, he completed a degree in social education. He then traveled through Africa for a year in 1975/1976. According to his own statement, this time has fundamentally determined his further life.

After returning to Germany, he quit his job in the social sector, broke up his apartment and earned his living as a traveling juggler and street musician. In 1979 he went to Tehran and from there toured the Afghan region of Nuristan . Via India it reached Sri Lanka .

Despite the lack of proper music studies and autodidactic playing, Oppermann is considered one of the best-known and best harp players beyond classical music. In addition to over 30 CD releases and numerous appearances, he is the organizer of many celebrations and festivals in the world music scene.

In 2014 Oppermann was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services to cultural exchange .

Today Oppermann lives with his wife and three children in northern Alsace.
