RIP Hayman (* 1951 in New Mexico ) is an American composer and performance artist .

life and work

RIP Hayman (also Rip Hayman) was born as Richard Perry Hayman. From 1969 to 1973 he studied at Columbia University with John Cage , Ravi Shankar , Chou Wen-chung , Petr Kotík and Philip Corner .

In 1973 Hayman rented a room in the James Brown House, New York, and in 1977 bought the house and bar he called The Ear Inn with friends . Music and literary events were held there with performance artists such as Michael Bloomfield , Laurie Anderson , Allen Ginsberg and John Ashbery .

Hayman co-founded and edited the 1973-1991 monthly EAR magazine with Beth Anderson and is the curator of the Sari Dienes Foundation. Hayman organized Dreamsound , events for sleeping listeners. He is also a sinologist and goes to sea as a captain.
