RUSE (English ruse = set / stratagem) is a real-time strategy - video game , which by Eugen Systems develops and Ubisoft was released. It was released on September 10, 2010 for Windows , PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 . RUSE focuses on deception and intelligence in warfare, going beyond mere violence. Players can use a number of traps and tricks to outsmart their enemies and change the outcome of battles.

RUSE's scenario is World War II .

The game's campaign is told from the perspective of US Major Joseph Sheridan. After dropping out of Yale University , Sheridan joined the US Army and was given command of the US 1st Armored Division . The game begins with a reference to a spy Prometheus, who provides the Germans with basic information, especially battle plans, and thus enables them to take offensive and defensive initiatives that cause heavy losses among the Allies. Despite these adverse conditions, Sheridan's tactical skills make victories possible. The player first intervened in North Africa in 1943, then in Italy, on D-Day in 1944 and on the Ardennes offensive. It is later revealed that Kate, an envoy from the American War Office, responsible for Division Seven and the 8th Guards Army, which also works for the Soviet Union , is the spy. It is also revealed that the Soviets were able to seize V2 rockets from Torgau and equipped them with nuclear weapons in order to use them in Germany to continue the Soviet expansion in Europe .

Gameplay

Console versions with unit limit (50–100 people / buildings), and only max. four players possible. The maximum number of players on the PC is eight.

Game modes

units

The units in the game are based on units and vehicles that were used in World War II or were available as a plan or prototype. Each nation has its own units that can only be created by this. However, it can be said that there is some sort of classification for the units, even if it only fits half of the nations.

  • The simplest unit is the infantry . It is the cheapest unit, can hide in forests and town squares, and ambush tanks quite well. However, this unit has the smallest attack range and is inferior to any tank in the field.
  • The next unit is the light scout. It is mostly a cheap, but unarmored and unarmed reconnaissance aircraft. Like the infantry, this can also hide and reveal hidden units.
  • The next unit that is most commonly used in the game is the tank . These can be divided into six categories: tank reconnaissance , very light tanks, light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks and monster tanks. Aside from the tank reconnaissance, the heavier the tanks are, the stronger they are in armor and firepower, but also more expensive, slower to build and slower in vehicle speed. The tank reconnaissance aircraft corresponds to the light reconnaissance aircraft, but with light armor and light armament.
  • The anti-tank system consists of only two units: an anti-tank gun and a tank destroyer . The anti-tank gun is a unit similar to light infantry. It can be used to support the infantry and hide like the infantry (apart from the Italian 90mm anti-tank / anti-aircraft cannon and the German 8.8cm anti-tank / air defense). From a technical point of view, the tank destroyer is a tank and can therefore be attacked by all anti-tank weapons, but due to its specialization, the tank destroyer is usually cheaper and stronger than normal tanks for fighting tanks. In return, the tank destroyer has no anti-infantry weapons and is completely helpless against infantry and anti-tank guns.
  • Artillery can be divided into three categories: normal artillery, assault gun and rocket artillery . Ordinary artillery is a long-range unarmored cannon. The assault gun is an artillery mounted on a tank. It is protected against bomber attacks and other artillery, but is mostly equipped with less range than normal artillery. The only difference between rocket artillery is the ammunition. Missiles are used instead of normal projectiles. The rocket artillery only has a medium range, but has a high rate of fire. This category is only available for the United States, Germany and the Soviet Union. All artillery categories have little effect on tanks and armored vehicles, but have a large effect on infantry and buildings.
  • With anti-aircraft guns , anti-aircraft artillery or simply FLAK , one can speak of two categories: there is the non-mobile and the mobile version. The non-mobile version is a unit similar to infantry and can hide in forests (apart from the German 88 mm Pa / La cannon). The mobile version is an armored anti-aircraft vehicle or a flak tank and can protect ground troops and tanks in combat and while on the move by preventing enemy aircraft from attacking. Both categories can destroy paratroopers in the air.
  • The flight units in the categories are the same for all nations. There is an aerial reconnaissance aircraft that can track down units through the landscape without any restrictions. But the reconnaissance aircraft is unarmed or only equipped with a very weak anti-machine gun.
  • The next unit are paratroopers . Paratroopers are three times more expensive than normal infantry and similarly strong in battle, but paratroopers are transported by plane and can quickly bring important locations under control or bypass the enemy in order to beat them.
  • The next unit are fighters . They are primarily used for air defense, but can also be used against unarmored targets and against infantry. Fighter-bombers serve as an intermediate category for attacking and destroying ground units. They can also fight against aircraft, whereby they are mostly weaker than the fighters, but they can also be used to destroy bunkers and buildings, whereby the effect of bombers is stronger. To combat units on the ground, the target must be "seen" by a scout.
  • The last category is bombers . Bombers are used to combat ground targets, the effect being similar to that of artillery. Infantry and buildings are badly damaged, but hardly any tanks. The bombs that are dropped when the bomber attacks have a relatively large spread. This can damage or destroy units that are too close or that you did not want to attack. The bombers have anti-aircraft machine guns against fighters, but the effect is very little.

Factions

The player can only command the troops of the USA in the campaign, although in the later game it is temporarily possible to command the troops of the Wehrmacht and units of allied states can be controlled in some missions. In the other game modes all of the following factions can be used: Great Britain , USA , Germany , Italy , France and the Soviet Union . Each faction has different strengths and weaknesses; this enables dynamic gameplay.

All nations are unique, which means that each nation has its own units. This means that z. B. only France can create the Foreign Legion and the Tiger battle armored car can only be built and used by Germany.

The strengths and weaknesses of the nations largely coincide with reality. The units in Germany are usually the strongest and most modern units, but - like the original - they are expensive and the construction takes a long time.

With the third add-on, the DLC RUSE: The Pack of the Rising Sun , the Japanese were also introduced in RUSE .

Lists

RUSE uses so-called lists (English: ruse), which enable the player to deceive and outsmart the opponent. They are divided into three categories: lists that obtain information (such as decryption ), lists that protect information (such as radio silence ) and lists that allow units or buildings to be forged in order to target the enemy to mislead (such as tank dummies).

Multiplayer

RUSE supports an online multiplayer mode and enables reserved servers. It is possible to play with each other as well as against each other. Furthermore, a game can also be decided on the basis of points that the player receives for destroyed units. The number of multiplayer on the consoles was reduced to 4 due to a lack of power.

In October 2010, Ubisoft released a patch that introduced the Valve Anti-Cheat System (VAC) to reduce cheating in the game.

Features

The game supports multi-touch on a select HP computer and PlayStation Move . Originally, Ubisoft's copy protection with permanent Internet connection was also to be used at RUSE , but Ubisoft made an exception for this game and published it on Steam .
