R. Etemadi ( Persian ر. اعتمادی, رجب‌علی اعتمادی, مهدی اعتمادی, alternative spelling and names: R. Iʿtimādī or R. Eʿtemâdi and Mehdi Etemdai) (* February 1934 in Lar, Fars ) is an Iranian writer and journalist.

Life

At the age of twelve or thirteen, Etemadi and his family moved from Lar to Tehran . He attended the Tehran Marvi School there and then studied sociology at the Tehran University. In 1956 he managed to get employed as a reporter for the oldest still-published Iranian newspaper Ettelā'āt . Until 1963 he was employed as a reporter for the publisher's daily newspaper, later also for the "Ettelā'āt-e-Haftegi" magazine. In 1966 he published the first Iranian magazine for youth Chawanan ( Persian جوانان) out. Until 1980 he was editor-in-chief of this weekly magazine, which set a record in Iran with 400,000 copies per issue. Between 1980 and 1998 he was banned from writing in Iran, but still lived in isolation in Iran.

Under the government of Mohammad Chātami , his works were allowed to be published under the pseudonym Mehdi Etemadi . These include, for example, the novels Her Majesty Love (1st edition: 2003) ( Persian عالیجناب عشق) or "the blue of love" ( Persian آبی عشق). The first novel reached its 15th edition in 2012.

His novels have not yet been translated and are largely unknown internationally.

Works

Etemadi is best known for his novels. He published 28 novels; 18 of them first appeared as a feature section in the magazines "Ettelā'āt-e-Haftegi" and "Tschawanan" and only later as a book. He also wrote a number of short stories.

His works are primarily love stories; In addition, some also deal with social issues, such as the novel The Resident of the Mourning Quarter ( Persian ساکن محله غم). In this, Etemadi describes the life of the Tehran prostitutes in the 1960s. His books are based on true stories. For example, he was inspired by a report in the BILD newspaper , the novel The Iranian Night ( Persian شب ایرانی) to write. The newspaper reported on the suicide of a German student out of love, that he killed himself for a Persian fellow student, even though the two were a couple in love. Etemadi visited this woman in Hamburg , he listened to her story and wrote the novel The Iranian Night from it .

The novels The sad shoes of love ( Persian کفشهای غمگین عشق), "A moment on the bridge" ( Persian یک لحظه روی پل), "Minus 40 degrees under the night" ( Persian چهل درجه زیر شب), "The blue bus" ( Persian اتوبوس آبی) are his most famous novels.

The total edition of his works is not known, especially since his works were illegally reproduced in Iran between 1980 and 1998. Since 1998 he has been under contract with the Shadan publishing house under the pseudonym Mehdi Etemadi.
