RP Sethu Pillai

RP Sethu Pillai ( Tamil ரா. பி. சேதுப்பிள்ளை ; * 1896 in Tirunelveli District , British India ; † 1961 ) was a Tamil Indian scholar, writer and professor of Tamil at the University of Madras .

Life

Sethu Pillai was born in Rajavallipuram in the Tirunelveli district in 1896 . After studying law, he worked as a lawyer. He took an interest in politics after hearing a speech by Maraimalai Adigal in Palayamkottai in June 1912 . After a brief political career as vice chairman of the Tirunelveli Municipal Council , he became a teacher and taught at Annamalai University from 1930 to 1936 . In 1936 he became a senior lecturer at the University of Madras . From 1946 until his death in 1961, he succeeded Vaiyapuri Pillai as head of the Tamil department at that university. He became a professor when his position as a lecturer was converted into a full professorship in 1948. In 1955 he received the first Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil Literature for his collection of essays Tamil inbam . In 1957 he became D. Litt. honoris causa . Sethu Pillai has authored more than 25 books, including a biography of Bishop Robert Caldwell ( Caldwell Aiyar Sarithram ). His knowledge of the Tamil language earned him the nickname Sollin Selvar ("son of the word"). Sethu Pillai has been a member of its advisory body since the Sahitya Akademi was founded in 1954. He also took part in the drafting of the Tamil encyclopaedia and the last volume of the Tamil lexicon . He wrote several books in English, notably the Dravidian comparative vocabulary and the edition of Francis Whyte Ellis ' Commentary on Tirukkural .

Sethu Pillai died in 1961. In 2009 his works were nationalized by the government of Tamil Nadu . Sethu Pillai had given Mo.Pa.Si ( MP Sivagnanam ) the title Silambu Selvar and praised his knowledge of the epic Silappatikaram .
