R136 (more precisely also RMC 136 as an acronym for Radcliffe Observatory Magellanic Clouds catalog) is a super star cluster , a large open star cluster that is located in the middle of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud . The star cluster is about 1–2 million years old. R136 consists of young, massive stars whose hard radiation makes the nebula glow and gives it a specific, filamentous appearance. Numerous young stars, also of the Wolf-Rayet star type , belong to the spectral class O3; 39 of these have been confirmed so far. Today (2014) the star cluster is subdivided into the partial cluster R136a and the Wolf-Rayet star R136b.
R136a
R136a was first traded as a supermassive star of around 2,000 solar masses, then estimated at 750 solar masses. The assumption made in the work mentioned last that R136a is an extremely dense cluster of several stars was confirmed by speckle observations and later with images from the Hubble space telescope . R136a has therefore been further resolved, for example in R136a1 and R136a2 (1984) and R136a5 (1998). The current status (2014) shows the stars R136a1 to R136a24.
The blue hypergiant R136a1 is one of the most massive stars currently known. R136a1 is in the photo on the right in the light center of R136.
R136b
R136b (other names: HD 36402 or BAT99-38) is a Wolf-Rayet star as a member of a multiple system that is surrounded by a very hot dust nebula.
