Mairie and Meetinghouse in Vanclans

Vanclans is a town and commune Déléguée in the municipality of Les Premiers Sapins with 215 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the French department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vanclans is located at 720  m , six kilometers south of Valdahon and about 29 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a hollow on the southern edge of the Valdahon plateau, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, on the edge of the first high Jura chains.

The area of the municipality of 9.60 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which averages 720 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. With the exception of a small rivulet, which rises in the area of the village, but disappears again after a short walk, the plateau has no above-ground flowing water because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the south-east, the community area extends into the much stronger relief area of the first high Jura ranges. It comprises a series of mostly parallel, predominantly wooded ridges of the heights of Cicon and extends to the east into the wooded area of the Bois du Roi . At 978 m, the highest point in Vanclans is reached on a knoll above the La Vêche plateau .

Neighboring towns of Vanclans are Étray and Rantechaux in the north, Passonfontaine in the east and Nods in the south and west.

history

Cicon Castle was built in the 10th century and formed an important rulership in the Middle Ages, which, in addition to Vanclans, included various villages on the Valdahon plateau. The castle was built in 1479 by the troops of King Louis XI. captured and destroyed. Together with Franche-Comté , Vanclans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.

The municipality of Vanclans was merged with Nods , Athose , Chasnans , Hautepierre-le-Châtelet and Rantechaux to form the Commune nouvelle Les Premiers Sapins with effect from January 1, 2016 .

Attractions

Notre-Dame-des-Anges church

The village church was built in the 18th century. Various typical farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center. On a rocky ledge on the western edge of a ridge above the village are the ruins of the former Cicon castle.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vanclans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It can be reached from Nods on the RN 57 via a departmental road. Other road connections exist with Valdahon, Épenoy and Rantechaux.
