Rantechaux is a town and commune Déléguée in the municipality of Les Premiers Sapins with 182 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the French department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Rantechaux is located at 752 m , five kilometers southeast of Valdahon and about 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a slope inclined slightly to the north on the southern edge of the Valdahon plateau, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, at the foot of the first high Jura ranges.
The area of the once 5.71 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which averages 740 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The plateau, characterized by various trough-like depressions ( Champ du Mont and Pré Rond ) has no above-ground running waters because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil. To the southeast, the former municipal area extends into the wooded area ( Bois du Roi ) on the northern slope of the heights of Cicon. Here, at 863 m, the highest point in Rantechaux is reached.
Neighboring towns of Rantechaux are Épenoy in the north, Passonfontaine in the east, Vanclans in the south and Étray in the west.
history
Already during the Burgundy period in the 6th century there was a Warasker village in what is now Rantechaux. In the Middle Ages, Rantechaux belonged to the dominions of Cicon and Châteauvieux. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
The municipality of Rantechaux was merged with Nods , Athose , Chasnans , Hautepierre-le-Châtelet and Vanclans to form the Commune nouvelle Les Premiers Sapins with effect from January 1, 2016 .
Attractions
The village church of Rois-Mages (Church of the Three Kings ) in Rantechaux was built in 1863 in neo -Gothic style on the site of a medieval chapel. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

population
With its last 176 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Rantechaux was one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (178 people were still counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow steadily since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Rantechaux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main roads N57 and D461. Road links exist with Valdahon, Nods and Passonfontaine.
