geography
Athose is located at 648 m , nine kilometers south-southwest of Valdahon and about 28 km southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the northern slope of the village stream of Athose, between the high plateau of Valdahon in the north and the first high Jura chains in the south.
The area of the 7.63 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the valley of Athose, which is drained from the village stream to the southwest to the Loue . To the west, the municipality extends to the plateau of Valdahon, an average of 700 m high, which is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The municipal area extends with a narrow strip to the southeast into the area of the first high Jura ranges, which run from the Roche de Hautepierre to the northeast. It extends over the height of Le Sapey (with 882 m the highest elevation of Athose) and the basin of Les Prés-de-Vaire to the heights of Cicon.
Athose includes the hamlet of Les Fermes-d'Athose ( 825 m ) north of the heights of Le Sapey and various individual farms. Neighboring towns to Athose are Chasnans in the north and east, Aubonne , Hautepierre-le-Châtelet and Mouthier-Haute-Pierre in the south and Lods and Lavans-Vuillafans in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Athose was ecclesiastically under the rule of Pontarlier . In 1537 the village came under the rule of Châteauneuf (near Vuillafans ) and in 1627 under the rule of Cicon. Together with Franche-Comté , Athose came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
The municipality of Athose was merged with Nods , Chasnans , Hautepierre-le-Châtelet , Rantechaux and Vanclans to form the Commune nouvelle Les Premiers Sapins with effect from January 1, 2016 .
Attractions
The Notre-Dame d'Athose church houses an important wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin from the 16th century and is therefore a pilgrimage destination . Various typical farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 181 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013) Athose was one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (257 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Athose was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on the D32, which leads from Nods to Lods. Another road connection is with Lavans-Vuillafans.
