The RACO Tm DT4H (today mostly Tm 235) are construction tractors (small locomotives) that were built between 1977 and 1993 by Robert Aebi & Cie in Regensdorf in 18 copies for various private railways. Most Tm had a tipping bridge of 9 m 2 for 6 t payload and a crane / excavator arm, two were equipped with a catenary lifting platform. In the standard-gauge basic version, the underframe and driver's cab were only 240 cm wide; such a vehicle was also built for meter gauge . Later, a total of ten 260 cm wide, slightly shorter vehicles of the type CT4H were built for various meter- gauge railways.

Mechanical part

A very spacious driver's cab with Webasto heating takes up a good half of the vehicle length of 9.96 m (or 9.24 m for the first two vehicles). It is accessible from the platform through a front door. There are no side doors in the original version, but the modified design for the narrow-gauge railways was given side doors, which made it possible to save the front platform. At the same time, these vehicles were built 260 instead of 240 cm wide. A tipping bridge is located next to the driver's cab and a hydraulic crane arm is attached to the other end, which can also be equipped with excavator shovels.

The standard-gauge vehicles are, since they are designed to transport considerable trailer loads, equipped with three brakes, namely an electric eddy current brake, a pneumatic trailer brake ( compressed air brake ) and a handbrake. In addition, an automatic air brake is installed for transfers in towing. The narrow-gauge vehicles, on the other hand, sometimes have vacuum brake equipment, depending on the owner.

Thanks to the narrow driver's cab of the standard-gauge version, it was possible to mount fold-out hanger brackets on both sides at the height of the side member (yellow / black striped). It is thus possible to take along a vehicle-length object, in particular a piece of rail (e.g. a prepared insulating joint), which is too long for the tipping bridge.

drive

The Tm of type DT4h are equipped with a hydrodynamic 4-speed gearbox and a 177 kW Deutz diesel engine with twelve cylinders. The maximum speed is 75 km / h. The newer narrow track tractors of the type 420 CT4H received a 336 kW strong Cummins diesel engine with six cylinders and reach 80 km / h. In the type designation of RACO mean:

  • 240, 270, 420 = engine power in hp
  • D = Deutz diesel engine, C = Cummins diesel engine
  • T = twin disk gear
  • 4 = type with platform (short or long)
  • H =

commitment

The tractors are used for all railway companies for daily maintenance, as the spacious cabin allows the Baudienst rotting carry. Thanks to the tipping bridge, a company car or freight car is only carried when larger quantities of material are required. These can be loaded and unloaded with the crane. The excavator shovel is installed for smaller earthworks. On the other hand, these Tm are also used on sporadic larger construction sites, often in combination with other tractors and diesel locomotives, often those of the construction companies carrying out the work.
