The three electric locomotives of the class 36 of the Rete Adriatica were built in 1905 as the second series of locomotives for the Northern Italian Veltlinbahn of the Rete Adriatica by the Hungarian company Ganz & Cie in Budapest .
technical features
The RA 36 had relatively large drive wheels coupled by means of a linkage and a wheel axle in front and behind. The outer drive axles were combined with the adjacent running axle to form a bogie. The two traction motors were stored in the main frame. The two motors drove the middle laterally displaceable drive axle via a triangular coupling frame, which was connected to the two outer drive axles with a coupling rod .
The frequency-dependent three-phase drive and the pre-set supply frequency did not permit any fine-grained control of the motor speed. The travel speed was set by cascading the two double motors with operation as single or in cascade with doubled number of pole pairs. After the start-up or transition phases with the structurally specified drive wheel diameter, a final idle speed of 35 or 71 km / h was achieved. Depending on the load conditions, the driving speed was always slightly below the theoretical maximum. (See also three-phase asynchronous motor )
The electrical energy was transmitted from the two-pole overhead contact line and via the track as the third power line of the three-phase AC system . The original version of the locomotive had a support bracket with two pantographs on the front and back on the roof . These were exchanged for U-shaped pantographs during operation at the SBB.
history
After their first use on the Veltlinbahn, the three machines were rented from 1906-1908 by the BBC so that the contractually guaranteed five locomotives were available for the opening of the Simplon Tunnel, which is half on Italian soil . The operation took place here with 3000 volts and 16 Hertz. The locomotives were run by the Swiss SBB as Fb 3/5, the letters “RA” in front of the original locomotive number were removed during operation on the Simplon line. After the delivery of further locomotives from BBC, the three locomotives were returned to the now newly founded Ferrovie dello Stato , where they were run as the E.360 series. The FS E.360.001 was in operation until the 1960s.
