The RETScreen Clean Energy Management Software (common abbreviation: RETScreen ) was developed as a software package by the government of Canada . The version RETScreen Expert was presented in 2016 at the Clean Energy Ministerial in San Francisco . The software is available in 36 languages, including German.

RETScreen Expert is the current version of the software that was released on September 19, 2016. With this software, the technical and financial feasibility of potential energy / energy efficiency projects in the context of renewable energies can be comprehensively recognized, evaluated and optimized. Existing projects can also be measured and checked with regard to their performance and their energy-saving / production potential can be identified in a complex manner. The "Viewer mode" of the RETScreen Expert can be operated free of charge and grants access to all software functions. The new version of the software offers a "professional mode" which can be used to save and print data for an annual fee.

The RETScreen Suite, namely a package of RETScreen 4 and RETScreen Plus, is the previous version. With this the power-heat coupling can be analyzed; Analyzes are also possible off-grid (off-grid).

In contrast to the RETScreen Suite, it is an integrated software platform that uses detailed and comprehensive archetypes for project evaluation. Portfolio analysis capacities are also available. The RETScreen Expert can be used to call up many databases (including a global database of climatic conditions that is served from 6,700 ground stations, as well as a NASA satellite database, cost and project databases, and a hydrology and product database). The software contains extensive training material, including an electronic textbook.

history

The first version of the RETScreen was published on April 30, 1998. RETScreen Version 4 was presented to the public on December 11, 2007 in Bali (Indonesia) by the Canadian Environment Minister. RETScreen Plus was released in 2011. RETScreen Suite (including RETScreen 4 and RETScreen Plus with many additional upgrades) was released in 2012. RETScreen Expert was released on September 19, 2016.

Program requirements

Program requirements are optionally the operating systems Microsoft® Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.7 (or higher version numbers) The program can also be run on Apple Macintosh computers via Parallels or VirtualBox for Mac.

partner

RETScreen is funded and administered by CanmetENERGY Varennes Research Center of Natural Resources Canada, a government department of Canada. The management team collaborates with many other government agencies and multilateral organizations and is technically supported by a diverse network of experts from industry, government and academia. Main partners are the Langley Research Center of NASA, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) (Ontario), UNEP - Energy Department of the Authority for Technology, Industry and Economy, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) , the World Bank (Prototype Carbon Fund), and York University's Sustainable Energy Initiative .

Application examples

As of February 2018, the RETScreen software had more than 575,000 users (all countries / regions combined).

An independent impact analysis estimated that by 2013, using the software had saved US $ 8 billion in costs, 20 MT annually in greenhouse gas emissions and the installation of renewable energy capacity of 24 GW.

RETScreen is generally used to promote and implement environmentally friendly energy projects. Examples:

  • The Empire State Building was equipped with energy efficiency measures
  • Production facilities of the company 3M Canada
  • by the Irish wind energy industry to analyze potential new projects
  • to monitor hundreds of schools in Ontario
  • Through Manitoba Hydro's heat / energy (bioenergy optimization) program to monitor project applications
  • For energy management at universities / technical colleges
  • In a multi-year evaluation of the performance of photovoltaic systems in Toronto, Canada
  • Analysis of solar air warming in US Air Force facilities
  • Urban systems, including identification of the need for renovation in terms of energy efficiency in different communities in Ontario.

A comprehensive catalog of articles about the detailed application of RETScreen in different contexts is available on the RETScreen LinkedIn page.

RETScreen is also used as a teaching and research medium at over 1,100 universities and technical colleges worldwide and is frequently cited in research literature. Examples are given in the and “Publications and Reports” and “University and College Courses” sections of the RETScreen Newsletter, available from the manual of the downloaded software.

The use of the RETScreen is recommended by the incentive initiatives for environmentally friendly energy consumption at all levels of government worldwide, including the UNFCCC and the EU; Canada, New Zealand and Great Britain, from many US states as well as from Canadian provinces, cities and towns and utility providers. National and regional seminars on working with RETScreen were held at the national and regional level following official requests from Chile, Saudi Arabia, 15 countries in West and Central Africa and the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE).

Awards and recognitions

In 2010, the software received the Public Service Award of Excellence, the government's highest award to civil servants

Both the software and its team have been nominated for or received many other prestigious awards, such as the Ernst & Young / Euromoney Global Renewable Energy Award, Energy Globe (National Award for Canada), and the GTEC Distinction Award Medal

reviews

An examination by the International Energy Agency beta publication of the program area "Hydropower" described the software as very impressive. The European Environment Agency describes the software as "extremely helpful". Further evaluations include the formulations "one of the few software applications and at the same time the best for evaluating the economic efficiency of facilities in the context of renewable energies" and "a tool for optimizing global market coherence".
