At the age of six Benedik began to learn to play the piano, involuntarily at first, so that at the age of twelve, he said, he "threw the notes". At 15 he started playing the piano in school bands. He later studied German and music at the University of Salzburg and then taught at the Linz Federal High School and at the Federal Economic High School in Körnerstraße.

In 1986 RIK released his first single, Sommer , after receiving many rejections from various record companies. In addition to his main job as a high school teacher, he gave around 120 concerts a year and performed not only with his own concert program, but also as an entertainer at events. His concert tours have taken him from Russia to Italy to Brussels, Berlin and China. In March 2009 he presented his DVD letters to Trieste in Trieste at the invitation of Trieste's Vice-Mayor Paolo Rovis .

His trademark was always black clothing, which earned him the name "Black Bard".

RIK died on May 29, 2011 as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident on Easteracher Strasse between Lambrechte and Ort im Innkreis. He was on his way back from a concert at a company party in Andorf. After cremation in the urn grove in Linz-Urfahr, he was buried at the St. Barbara cemetery .
