Overlay of an interferometric infrared image (ellipsoids) of the VLTI, 5.5 days after the eruption and a radio astronomical image of the VLBA, 13.5 days after the eruption. You can see the expansion in the meantime. One division corresponds to 5 milli-arcseconds.

RS Ophiuchi ( RS Oph for short ) is a recurrent (recurring) nova in the constellation of the Serpent Bearer . In the normal phases it has an apparent magnitude of 12.5 mag. In the years 1898, 1933, 1958, 1967, 1985 and 2006 there were outbursts of brightness down to 4.5 mag.

RS Ophiuchi belongs to the symbiotic stars , that is, it is a binary star system consisting of a white dwarf and a red giant . The dwarf star sucks matter from the red giant . After about 20 years, enough gas has accumulated to ignite a thermonuclear explosion under the strong gravity of the white dwarf .

The name part "RS" follows the rules for naming variable stars and says that RS Ophiuchi is the eleventh variable star that was discovered in the constellation of the Serpent Bearer ( Ophiuchus in Latin ).
