The RWD-16 was a Polish sport and touring aircraft from the 1930s.
development
With the RWD-16, RWD wanted to create an inexpensive light aircraft for the Polish market that could therefore be sold in large numbers. The prototype received a 50 hp Walter Mikron I engine and completed its maiden flight towards the end of 1936 with the registration number SP-AXY . The testing involved some modifications; the span was shortened to 11.00 m and the wing area was reduced to 14.95 m². The most fundamental change concerned the installation of a more powerful Mikron II engine with 60 hp. In the winter of 1938/1939, RWD (DWL) in Warsaw- Okęcie began building a small series called RWD-16bis . The use of the 60 hp Avia 3 engine was also tested, with which the aircraft reached a top speed of 172 km / h. Since the drive ultimately did not go into production, parallel to the revision of the aircraft, considerations were made to equip it with the British in- line engine Cirrus Minor with 90 hp. With this configuration, a series of ten aircraft named RWD-21 was finally started in 1939 , but otherwise structurally identical to the RWD-16bis. Until the attack on Poland only a few copies could be made, after which the construction was stopped. A RWD-21, which could be removed from the access of the German troops by being transferred to Romania , came back to Poland after the end of the Second World War .
construction
The RWD-16 was a cantilever low-wing aircraft in all-wood construction . The fuselage structure, which also housed the 70 liter fuel tank, was made of four wooden longitudinal spars covered with plywood . The inmates sat next to each other. The two-part wing had a plywood leading edge. The aircraft had a rigid rear wheel landing gear, the main wheels of which were not connected by an axle.
