The RWD-2 was a light sport aircraft produced by the Polish manufacturer RWD in the early 1930s.

development

The RWD-2 was developed in 1929 by the three designers Stanisław Rogalski, Stanisław Wigura and Jerzy Drzewiecki as the successor to their first design, the RWD-1 , from the previous year . The prototype made its maiden flight in May of that year and then completed a tour of Europe. On October 16, Franciszek Ż Wirko and Antoni Kocjan reached a height of 4004 m with the RWD-2, which was the world record in their class. Due to this success, the decision was made to take part in the Europe sightseeing flight of 1930 with this model and RWD was commissioned to build three more copies. The participation of these aircraft at the meeting turned out to be quite successful and the pilots Stanisław Płonczyński and Edward Więckowski achieved 19th and 21st place overall. The further development RWD-4 appeared in 1930, also took part in the competition and was built in small numbers.

construction

The RWD-2 was a cantilever high-wing aircraft in all-wood construction . The hull with a hexagonal cross-section and plywood planking offered space for two people sitting one behind the other, but they had a very limited field of vision to the front. The continuous wing with two main spars was also planked with plywood from the front spar to the leading edge of the wing and covered with fabric behind it. The RWD-2 had a self-supporting , wooden normal tail unit with plywood-clad fins and fabric-covered oars. The rigid landing gear was rubber-sprung and consisted of two disc wheels that were not connected to one another by an axle and a tail spur hinged to the fuselage.
