The series was built in three units in 1983/84 by Rickmers Werft, which also designed the ships. The RW 29 was structurally based on the dock ship Este Submerger II , which was also delivered in 1984 , but which was designed to be slightly larger. The RW 29 ships had a deckhouse arranged far forward in order to allow the longest possible continuous cargo space. The cargo space, which is 8.5 meters wide and 5.2 meters high, is open at the back and ends with an approximately 10-meter-wide flap designed as a RoRo rear ramp; at the top, the space is closed with pontoon hatch covers. Two cranes, each with a lifting force of 60 tons, were available as their own loading gear. The series was equipped with two-stroke main engines of the type Wichmann 6 AXAG or 6 AXA. However , in 1988 the Hans Behrens received two four-stroke main engines of the type Krupp MaK 6 M 453 B.
