Rachel Holzer

Rachel Holzer (born November 8, 1899 in Krakow , † November 14, 1998 in Melbourne ) was a Polish - Australian actress of Yiddish theater and film.

Life

Holzer was born the daughter of a painter and chairman of the Krakow Jewish workers' union. At the age of six she appeared in the Yiddish theater . After completing her acting training and appearing in Polish theaters, she switched to the Yiddish theater in 1926. In 1927 she joined the well-known Vilna troupe . She later moved to Warsaw and played for Ida Kaminska and at the National Theater. She played a leading role in the first Yiddish sound film Al Khet in 1936 . In 1938 she left Poland on a world tour and finally traveled to Australia to see her sister.

Together with her husband, the playwright Chaim Rozenstein , she lived in Melbourne, where she made an important contribution to the Yiddish theater there. In 1977 she retired.
