from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marienfelde radar system , military USAFSS / ESC station Marienfelde and popularly known as "Amiberg" in Berlin , was a listening station for the intelligence service of the United States Air Force ( US Air Force Security Service , USAFSS; from 1979: Electronic Security Command , built between 1962 and 1965) ESC) on the outskirts of Berlin in the Marienfelde district .

The station was located on a 13  hectare site on a mountain of rubble on Diedersdorfer Weg , which is now called Schlehenberg . The official task of the station, similar to the facility on the Teufelsberg , was to "secure air traffic and 'explore atmospheric phenomena'". The system was operated by the 6912th Electronic Security Group (690th Electronic Security Wing) of the US Air Force and a unit of the British Royal Air Force . Jeffrey Carney , a soldier of the 6912th Electronic Security Group , for the Ministry for State Security of the GDR , through many years of espionage activity , made it known after the political change that electronic warfare was also carried out in the facility .

On September 18, 1991, the facility was ceremoniously closed and cleared. The buildings were demolished in late 1996. Around the year 2000 the mountain was renatured and today it serves as a publicly dedicated and protected green area with an area of 4.71 hectares under the name Radarberg Diedersdorfer Weg . The local recreation area is directly related to the Marienfelde amusement park on the opposite side of the street from Diedersdorfer Weg.
